千鳥格子 chidori gōshi

![Houndstooth](https://www.furoshiki.com/swatches/chidori-goshi.svg)

A broken check whose shapes look like plovers flying in a line. Chidori reads as 'a thousand catches' (千取り), a wish to win many good things; in tea circles a very fine version is called Rikyū kantō after Sen no Rikyū.

Woven broken check; the familiar wool houndstooth reached Japan from Britain in the Meiji era

The Japanese name sees the shapes as plovers in flight. In the tea world a very fine indigo version is known as Rikyū kantō, named for Sen no Rikyū.
