A drawstring purse for money and charms; in treasure patterns it stands for wealth that is kept safe.

Everyday Edo-period purse (sagemono)

Because kimono have no pockets, Edo-period people hung small containers from the obi, secured with a netsuke toggle. The kinchaku, a drawstring bag for coins, medicine or charms, was one of the most common. As kimono gave way to Western dress after 1868 these sagemono declined. As a treasure motif it stands for money kept safe.

Kinchaku are still made as handbags and pouches, especially to go with kimono and yukata.
