Fallen leaves show late autumn and the passing of the seasons.

Autumn imagery in Japanese poetry from the Man'yōshū (8th century)

Maple, chrysanthemum and the seven autumn grasses have signified autumn, solitude and the passing of life since the Man'yōshū, and these themes run through Noh costumes, lacquer and ceramics. Fallen and wind-blown leaves belong to this autumn vocabulary; a simple single fallen leaf like this one is mostly a modern seasonal motif rather than a named classical pattern.

Worn in late autumn; the related fukiyose (blown-together) design mixes leaves, pine needles and nuts.
