Fireworks are the high point of summer festivals and stand for celebration and passing beauty.

Edo period; Ryōgoku (Sumida River) fireworks from 1733

The famous Edo display began on the Sumida River at Ryōgoku after the Kyōhō famine and epidemic of 1732, when fireworks were set off at memorial festivals for the dead and to cheer the public. By 1810 the 'Ryōgoku kawabiraki' was an established tradition, and the rival makers Kagiya and Tamaya competed each year; crowds still shout their names.

Summer fireworks festivals remain a highlight of Japanese summer, and fireworks are a standard yukata pattern.
