A single band runs top to bottom (vertical stripes are the typical example). In flat, hidden-knot and basic wraps it shows diagonally; in the watermelon wrap, which ties the two ends of one side, it sits level or upright.

Furoshiki trade term

Tate-dori, the 'upright layout', is the makers' name for a design running top to bottom; vertical stripes are its typical form, and those became fashionable in the late Edo period. The same word is used in the tate-dori/yoko-dori pair for kimono and obi layouts.
