# Nested squares

枡取り masu-dori

Squares of decreasing size nest inside one another like stacked masu measuring boxes. When wrapped the squares show as chevrons (mountain shapes), and the knot falls on the plain part.

Masu motif; Edo–Meiji folk textiles

Masu, the square wooden boxes used to measure rice and sake, are a lucky motif because masu sounds like masu, 'to increase'. Nested masu (ireko-masu) seen from above appear on indigo tsutsugaki textiles such as futon covers made for weddings and celebrations from the Meiji to Shōwa periods, where they were read as multiplying good fortune. Masu-dori turns that motif into a whole-furoshiki layout.
