# Noshi band

熨斗取り noshi-dori

A wide band runs corner to corner, resembling noshi (dried abalone folded in paper) used for celebrations. As with the diagonal split, in flat and hidden-knot wraps the band crosses the front of the parcel straight.

Noshi motif; Edo period

Noshi was originally thin strips of dried abalone attached to ceremonial gifts and offerings; later it became the folded paper noshi still put on gifts. By the Edo period bundles of noshi strips (tabane-noshi) had become an auspicious textile motif, used most famously on yūzen-dyed furisode. A noshi-dori furoshiki runs one broad band corner to corner like a noshi strip, making it a natural choice for celebration gifts.
